Giorgos Skoteinos was a Cypriot artist, born in Limassol in 1937 and raised in Famagusta. He attended the Greek High School of Famagusta and later studied theatre at the Drama School of the National Theatre in Athens from 1961 to 1964. During this time, he also attended classes at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Between 1964 and 1967, he studied cinema at the Visual Art and Movie Subscription Group in New York.
Skoteinos was known for his involvement in the EOKA struggle for Cypriot independence, which delayed his studies. In an interview with a local newspaper in 2021, he recounted his participation in EOKA and his subsequent imprisonment, which led to a delay in his education.
In the latter part of his career, Skoteinos created an exhibition titled “The Circle of Denunciation” in response to his experiences as a refugee following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The exhibition was first shown in Greece and then in Cyprus, before being sent to the Alexandria Biennale in Egypt, where it faced some challenges. Eventually, the exhibition was displayed at the Commonwealth Institute in England, where it was well-received. Skoteinos’ goal was to inspire Greeks and Cypriots living in Europe to engage in peaceful demonstrations in response to the exhibition.
Throughout his career, Skoteinos received several awards:
1982 – 5th Indian Triennial, Lalit Kala Academy, silver medal
1968 – Alexandria Biennale 1968, honorary distinction
2015 – Arts Award of the Republic of Cyprus
Upon his passing in December 2022, at the age of 85, the Mayor and Municipal Council of Ayia Napa expressed their sorrow and condolences to his wife Noni and his children. They recognised Skoteinos’ significant contributions to the cultural events of the city and the Famagusta District. As a member of the Committee of the International Sculpture Symposium and an honorary member of the Seferis Symposia, his works have been displayed in the Centre for Seferic Studies in Ayia Napa. In honor of his contributions to the community, the Municipal Council decided to hold his funeral at municipal expense, following consultation with his family.

Lots will close at their scheduled time unless a bid is placed within five minutes of a Lot’s scheduled closing time, in which case we will extend the sale of that Lot by five minutes.
The extension of any Lot’s closing time does not affect any other Lot’s closing time; therefore, it is possible that Lots will close out of the announced auction ending time. Lots may extend for up to two hours to accommodate competitive bidding.
Unsold artworks from the latest auction are now available for purchase at their starting price for a limited time. The Aftersale offers a second chance for unclaimed items to find their new collector. They can be viewed on this page under the ‘Aftersale‘ label or by visiting the gallery.

The term “secondary market” refers to art that has been sold at least once before. In simpler terms, the secondary market deals with resale, typically with artworks by artists who have a substantial reputation. For example, most artworks sold through auction houses form part of the secondary market.

The total purchase price is calculated, in short, as such:
Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium (12%) + *VAT (5% or 19%)
The Buyer’s Premium is added to the Hammer Price (winning bid) and is included as part of the total Purchase Price payable by the successful Bidder. In an Online Auction conducted by Peter’s Gallery, the Buyer’s Premium rate is as follows: 12% of the Hammer Price of any amount.
*Value Added Tax (VAT) applies as follows: artworks are taxed at a reduced rate of five percent (5%) (‡ symbol) or nineteen percent (19%) († symbol) on the hammer price, depending on the item. For items marked with the Omega symbol (Ω), the hammer price is exempt from VAT. A nineteen percent (19%) VAT applies to the Buyer’s Premium for all items, regardless of the symbol.
