Alekos Kontopoulos, born in 1904 in Lamia, was a significant figure in Greek art, known for his contributions to abstract art and his work as a writer. His interest in painting began during his school years, and in 1921, he commenced hagiography classes before studying painting under G. Sarafianos. After his first exhibition in his hometown, he moved to Athens and was admitted to the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he studied under renowned professors such as Geraniotis, Iakovidis, Lytras, and Mathiopoulos, graduating in 1929. Subsequently, he pursued further studies in Paris and Belgium, focusing on the Flemish school of painting.
Upon returning to Greece, Kontopoulos became associated with the “New Pioneers” and was a founding member of the “Free Artists”. He later pursued postgraduate studies in Paris and returned permanently to Greece in 1939. During the Occupation, he participated in the National Resistance and played a decisive role in the establishment of the Artistic Professional Chamber. In the following years, he participated in numerous exhibitions abroad, including the São Paulo Biennale and the Venice Biennale.
Kontopoulos transitioned from realistic depiction to aniconic painting in 1947, becoming a pioneer of abstract art in Greece. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he authored four books, three of which were published during the dictatorship of the colonels.
Following his passing in 1975, his contributions were honored through various initiatives, including a retrospective exhibition organized by the National Gallery and the establishment of a public library and a municipal gallery bearing his name. Alekos Kontopoulos left a lasting legacy in Greek art and literature, with his work continuing to be celebrated and recognized posthumously.

The total purchase price is calculated, in short, as such:
Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium (12%) + *VAT (5% or 19%)
The Buyer’s Premium is added to the Hammer Price (winning bid) and is included as part of the total Purchase Price payable by the successful Bidder. In an Online Auction conducted by Peter’s Gallery, the Buyer’s Premium rate is as follows: 12% of the Hammer Price of any amount.
*Value Added Tax (VAT) applies as follows: artworks are taxed at a reduced rate of five percent (5%) (‡ symbol) or nineteen percent (19%) († symbol) on the hammer price, depending on the item. For items marked with the Omega symbol (Ω), the hammer price is exempt from VAT. A nineteen percent (19%) VAT applies to the Buyer’s Premium for all items, regardless of the symbol.

Please note that Lot prices listed on this page are exclusive of the Buyer’s Premium, of any applicable taxes and costs, unless otherwise noted.
Lots will close at their scheduled time unless a bid is placed within five minutes of a Lot’s scheduled closing time, in which case we will extend the sale of that Lot by five minutes.
The extension of any Lot’s closing time does not affect any other Lot’s closing time; therefore, it is possible that Lots will close out of the announced auction ending time. Lots may extend for up to two hours to accommodate competitive bidding.
