Frangoulides Solomos biography

Solomos Frangoulides, born in Pano Zodia in 1902, pursued his studies at the School of Art in Athens from 1924 to 1932. During his time there, he was mentored by esteemed teachers such as G. Iakovides, N. Lytras, Spyros Vikatos, Georgios Roilos, and Pavlos Mathiopoulos. Solomos excelled in all of his exams throughout his academic journey.

After graduating, he returned to Cyprus for two years to work on the hagiography of a Church in the village of Agros. In 1934, he went back to Athens where he worked as a designer. During World War II, Solomos actively participated in the resistance against the Germans, safeguarding a printing office in his own room. In 1947, prior to the Civil War, he returned to Cyprus, where he eventually passed away in 1981.

Solomos Frangoulides worked on various icon-paintings for numerous churches in Cyprus. Combining influences from Italian and Byzantino styles, he also created painted portable icons. Additionally, he shared his insights on art through reviews published in newspapers and magazines.

His artistic endeavors reached a larger audience through solo exhibitions including those at Parnasso in Athens (1936), Flerianou hall in Athens (1937), Costantia Hotel in Famagusta (1953), the Spiritual House of Nicosia (1972), and the Cumberland Hotel in London (1986, held posthumously at a retrospective exhibition in his honor).

Solomos Frangoulides also participated in group exhibitions, such as the Pancyprian Exhibition (1932), Panhellenic Exhibitions (1933, 1940, 1941), Salon d’Art Moderne in Paris (1961), the “Exhibition of Cypriot Art” organized by the Socialism Institute in London and Edinburgh, and the Biennale d’ Art Sacra in Foggia, Italy.

His works can be found in various public collections, including the State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art and the Famagusta Municipal Gallery in Cyprus, as well as the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus. In Greece, his art is housed in the collections of the Ministry of Culture and the City Hall of Messologgi. Furthermore, some of his works are preserved at the Pouskin Museum in Moscow, Russia. In his will, Solomos Frangoulides generously bequeathed his personal collection to the Greek State.

His contributions were recognized with a silver medal at the Biennale d’ Arte in Foggia, Italy.

*Value Added Tax (VAT) applies as follows: artworks are taxed at a reduced rate of five percent (5%) (‡ symbol) or nineteen percent (19%) († symbol) on the hammer price, depending on the item. For items marked with the Omega symbol (Ω), the hammer price is exempt from VAT. A nineteen percent (19%) VAT applies to the Buyer’s Premium for all items, regardless of the symbol.
