Arman (1928-2005), born Armand Pierre Fernandez, was a French-American artist best known for his contribution to the Nouveau Réalisme movement and his innovative approach to assemblage and found objects. His diverse body of work included sculptures, paintings, and prints, as well as large-scale public installations.
Arman’s artistic journey began in Nice, France, where he first studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs and later at the École du Louvre in Paris. Initially influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism, his focus shifted towards the use of everyday objects after encountering the work of Kurt Schwitters in 1954. Arman’s fascination with the United States and the emerging Pop Art movement further inspired his artistic approach.
In 1960, Arman became a founding member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement, along with artists such as Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely. Arman gained international recognition for his unique method of assembling discarded objects, known as “accumulations,” which challenged traditional notions of art by using everyday items in new contexts. This concept manifested in works featuring various objects, including tools, watches, clocks, furniture, automobile parts, jewelry, and musical instruments.
Some of Arman’s most significant works include “Long Term Parking,” a 60-foot sculpture consisting of 60 cars set in 40,000 pounds of concrete, and “Hope for Peace,” a 32-meter monument in Beirut made from 83 tanks and military vehicles. Throughout his career, Arman participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and received several awards, such as the “Sport Artist of the Year” award from The American Sport Art Museum and Archives in 2003.
Arman’s personal life included three marriages and six children. After his death in New York in 2005, his ashes were buried at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris in 2008. Today, Arman’s work can be found in many prestigious collections and institutions worldwide, solidifying his legacy as a groundbreaking artist and a significant figure in the history of contemporary art.

The total purchase price is calculated, in short, as such:
Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium (12%) + *VAT (5% or 19%)
The Buyer’s Premium is added to the Hammer Price (winning bid) and is included as part of the total Purchase Price payable by the successful Bidder. In an Online Auction conducted by Peter’s Gallery, the Buyer’s Premium rate is as follows: 12% of the Hammer Price of any amount.
*Value Added Tax (VAT) applies as follows: artworks are taxed at a reduced rate of five percent (5%) (‡ symbol) or nineteen percent (19%) († symbol) on the hammer price, depending on the item. For items marked with the Omega symbol (Ω), the hammer price is exempt from VAT. A nineteen percent (19%) VAT applies to the Buyer’s Premium for all items, regardless of the symbol.

Please note that Lot prices listed on this page are exclusive of the Buyer’s Premium, of any applicable taxes and costs, unless otherwise noted.
Lots will close at their scheduled time unless a bid is placed within five minutes of a Lot’s scheduled closing time, in which case we will extend the sale of that Lot by five minutes.
The extension of any Lot’s closing time does not affect any other Lot’s closing time; therefore, it is possible that Lots will close out of the announced auction ending time. Lots may extend for up to two hours to accommodate competitive bidding.
