Pavlos Dionyssopoulos (1930-2019) was born in Filiatra, Messinia, in 1930. He began his artistic journey by studying painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1953 under the guidance of Yannis Moralis. In 1954, Dionyssopoulos received a French state scholarship, which took him to Paris, where he was exposed to the innovative atmosphere of the 1960s and the New Realists movement led by Pierre Restany. This period marked a significant shift in his artistic approach, as he transitioned from conventional canvas painting to utilizing everyday materials of modern civilization, with a particular focus on printed paper cut into fine strips using a machine.
Dionyssopoulos held his first solo exhibition in Paris at Galerie J in 1964 and subsequently collaborated with major European galleries such as Sonnabend and Iolas. He continued to exhibit regularly in Greece, participating in significant events that showcased the Greek avant-garde art scene abroad, including the Avantgarde Griechenland in Berlin in 1968 and Eight Artists, Eight Attitudes, Eight Greeks at the ICA in London in 1975. His artistic contributions were further recognized when he represented Greece at the 1980 Venice Biennale and participated in the Europalia festival in Belgium in 1982.
In 1997, a retrospective exhibition of Dionyssopoulos’s work was organized at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, and later presented in Athens at the ASFA Factory. Notably, his project “Football Players” is located at the ‘Omonia’ station of the Athens Metro, showcasing his enduring impact on public art.
Dionyssopoulos’s artistic legacy is celebrated through the presence of his works in esteemed institutions such as The National Gallery of Greece, The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Centre George Pompidou in Paris, Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, Neue National-galerie in Berlin, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and numerous other public and private collections. His enduring artistic contributions continue to be celebrated within the Greek art community and internationally, reflecting his significant impact on the art world and his lasting legacy in the cultural heritage of Greece.

The total purchase price is calculated, in short, as such:
Hammer Price + Buyer’s Premium (12%) + *VAT (5% or 19%)
The Buyer’s Premium is added to the Hammer Price (winning bid) and is included as part of the total Purchase Price payable by the successful Bidder. In an Online Auction conducted by Peter’s Gallery, the Buyer’s Premium rate is as follows: 12% of the Hammer Price of any amount.
*Value Added Tax (VAT) applies as follows: artworks are taxed at a reduced rate of five percent (5%) (‡ symbol) or nineteen percent (19%) († symbol) on the hammer price, depending on the item. For items marked with the Omega symbol (Ω), the hammer price is exempt from VAT. A nineteen percent (19%) VAT applies to the Buyer’s Premium for all items, regardless of the symbol.

Please note that Lot prices listed on this page are exclusive of the Buyer’s Premium, of any applicable taxes and costs, unless otherwise noted.
Lots will close at their scheduled time unless a bid is placed within five minutes of a Lot’s scheduled closing time, in which case we will extend the sale of that Lot by five minutes.
The extension of any Lot’s closing time does not affect any other Lot’s closing time; therefore, it is possible that Lots will close out of the announced auction ending time. Lots may extend for up to two hours to accommodate competitive bidding.
