Dimitris Biskinis (1891-1947) was a Greek artist born in Patra, who later moved to Athens with his family. He studied at The School of Fine Arts, focusing on painting under the guidance of prominent artists such as Constantinos Volanakis, Dimitrios Geraniotis, Georgios Jakobides, and Georgios Roilos.

Biskinis is recognized as a leading figure in the Greek Symbolism movement. His artistic style is characterized by imagination and a romantic Jugendstil aesthetic, inspired by Greek history, culture, and traditions. Despite his significant contribution to graphic arts in Greece, he remains relatively unknown in this regard. Additionally, his unique religious icons, which were greatly admired by Polychronis Lembessis, showcase his diverse artistic talent.

Following his participation in the Balkan Wars, Biskinis was awarded the Averoff prize in 1914, along with a scholarship to study in Paris. However, the outbreak of the First World War delayed his relocation to Paris until 1919, when he finally enrolled at the Académie Julian. During his time in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and associated with fellow Greek artists such as Apostolos Geralis and Georgios Gounaropoulos.

Upon his return to Greece in 1929, Biskinis was appointed as a professor of decorative arts and perspective at The School of Fine Arts in Athens. He later held the position of vice head at the institution. Throughout his life, he maintained close friendships with influential figures such as Kostis Palamas and Georgios Drossinis, both of whom dedicated a number of poems to Biskinis.

Biskinis’ works can be found in prestigious institutions such as The National Gallery of Greece, The Municipal Gallery of Athens, The Municipal Gallery of Rhodes, The Leventis Gallery, as well as in numerous public and private collections. His artistic legacy continues to be celebrated for its significant impact on Greek art history.
