Oumbertos Argyros (1884-1963) was a distinguished Greek artist, born in Kavala, whose artistic journey began at The School of Fine Arts in Athens in 1900. Under the tutelage of renowned mentors such as Nikiforos Lytras and Georgios Roilos, Argyros honed his skills and graduated as an exceptional student four years later.

In 1906, Argyros continued his artistic pursuits in Munich at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he further developed his craft under the guidance of esteemed instructors such as M. Seitz, L. von Lofftz, and K. von Marr. His studies were supported by a grant from the Averoff Foundation, allowing him to immerse himself in the Bavarian Capital and study the iconography of important religious landmarks. This led him to embark on journeys to Mount Athos, Jerusalem, Egypt, and various European cities, enriching his artistic perspective and influencing his future works.

Argyros resided in Munich for twenty-three years, returning to Greece in 1929. His expertise and artistic prowess led to his appointment as a professor at The School of Fine Arts in Athens, where he imparted his knowledge until 1953. During the Second World War, Argyros was appointed as the official state artist to document the battles of the Greek-Italian War, and his works from this period are now housed in The National War Museum of Greece.

Throughout his career, Argyros participated in prestigious exhibitions, including the Glaspalast Exhibition in Munich and the Venice Biennale in 1934 and 1936. His works can be found in numerous public and private collections, including The National Gallery in Athens, The Athens Municipal Gallery, The Leventis Gallery, The Averoff Gallery, The National War Museum of Greece, and The National Bank of Greece. Oumbertos Argyros’ enduring artistic contributions continue to be celebrated, reflecting his significant impact on the Greek art scene and his lasting legacy in the cultural heritage of Greece.
