Alexandrakis Alexandros biography

Alexandros Alexandrakis (1913-1968)

Alexandros Alexandrakis, a distinguished Greek artist, graduated from The School of Fine Art in Athens in 1937, where he garnered acclaim by winning major art awards in categories such as Portrait, Nude, Semi-nude, and Composition. His exceptional achievements are considered unparalleled in the history of the school’s annual prize.

Renowned for his international reputation, Alexandrakis made a significant impact in the United States, regularly submitting his work to The Guggenheim in New York for its annual exhibition. His artistic prowess was further exemplified in 1950 when he secured both the first and second prizes for his submissions in a poster design competition for the Marshal Plan, organized by the American Government.

One of Alexandrakis’ notable works, “Seated Female Nude I,” serves as a celebration of the female form, blending the ideals and realities of beauty. His artistic exploration of the ideal form reflects a deep preoccupation with the meaning of beauty, exemplified by the elegant portrayal of the body’s posture, a characteristic feature of his work.

The enduring impact of Alexandrakis’ art is evident through its presence in numerous public and private collections in Greece and Cyprus, including The National Gallery Greece, The Municipality of Athens, The State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art, The Leventis Gallery, and The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Centre Foundation. His contributions to the art world continue to be celebrated, solidifying his place as a revered figure in Greek art history.

Notice

Lot Prices

Please note that Lot prices listed on this page are exclusive of the Buyer’s Premium, of any applicable taxes and costs, unless otherwise noted.

Auction closing times

Lots will close at their scheduled time unless a bid is placed within five minutes of a Lot’s scheduled closing time, in which case we will extend the sale of that Lot by five minutes.

The extension of any Lot’s closing time does not affect any other Lot’s closing time; therefore, it is possible that Lots will close out of the announced auction ending time. Lots may extend for up to two hours to accommodate competitive bidding.

Certificate of Authenticity

A Certificate of Authenticity is essential to identify and attest to an artwork's genuineness and provenance. Peter's Gallery issues a Certificate of Authenticity to accompany every piece from our collection.
